If I understand the term deepity reasonably correctly, this quote below attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt should surely qualify as a worthy deepity:
"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams"
It seems to be very high sounding and philosophical. But what does it really mean?!Is there really any profundity or great philosophy about this quote that it is quoted so often and at so many places, other than that it sounds very idealistic and is coming from a celebrity (that too a First Lady of the USA!!!)
This is not the only famous quote of this pretender of philosophy. There are more inane and trivial platitudes from this agony aunt of the New Deal era, on this site.
What future is this quote talking about and what are the dreams and what beauty of the dreams should one believe in.
Does believing in the beauty of our dreams really secure us a great future. Is the reality of our lives that simple and at the beck and call of our beliefs and dreams.
One really can't make any sense or meaning out of this quote. Yet these kinds of quotes are the staple of the motivational and personal coaching claptrap and voodoo that resounds in the air of USA workplace and media.
If a celebrity spouts nonsense and inanity, it is elevated to inspirational and philosophical folklore. If you and I were to talk this kind of 'hot air' we would become a laughing stock.
But such is the privilege and respect that the vanities of the rich and the famous are rewarded with, that one has just marvel wistfully at this irony of life.
While this quote left me bewildered, I take solace at the nice nature graphic that adorns this vacuous quote.

hey!

anyways nice write up..
Surya,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments. It always helps to hear a nice word or two from the readers, when most of the comment responses I receive are hostile.
Will make it a point to post some shorter blog entries
